Unit 5 It’s good for you

Lesson 4 Food for the brain

Speak and listen

  1. Take a class survey about how many hours you sleep.

    Example:

Teacher: How many hours do you sleep a day?

Student: I sleep 8 hours every night.

  1. Listen to four speakers in a radio report about sleep.

Teacher: A lot of my students find it difficult to stay awake in class because they don’t sleep at night. They’re tired when they come to school, so they can’t learn. They need more sleep.

Teenager: My school starts at 7.45. I take the bus, so I get up at 6.15. I go to bed late, and it’s hard to get up in the morning. But I hate going to bed early. I don’t feel tired then.

Dad: My son goes to bed really late. He’s always busy with things. I tell him that he doesn’t sleep enough, you eat more, you don’t feel well, and you feel unhappy and stressed. But he doesn’t listen to me.

Doctor:       Your body and sleeping times change when you’re a teenager. This means teenagers prefer going to bed much later, usually after 11 p.m. Then they’re tired because most schools start early. But teenagers need eight and a half to nine hours of sleep every night or they can’t lead a healthy life. As I tell my patients: sleep is food for the brain.
